NEWSLETTER #1, SEPT. 2007
As I began building the new Wildflecken Heroes website, there, in my mind's eye, I saw a little black cloud on the horizon that was talking to me. It was telling me that 'this is a period piece', It's 1972-1975. It's limited. There are only so many old service related pictures and so many stories that could be accumalated for display. This is exacerbated by the lack of response from folks who either don't have contributions or don't want to take the time to dig out the old photos and memoies from that old box in the basement, attic, or closet, the realm of possibities seemed to shrink even smaller.
But, as I dredge the depths of the internet searching for any nugget of relavent Wildflecken content a clearer picture begins to come into focus.
Wildflecken is very much alive. It is not just an artifact from the past. It is a living, breathing, growing place with as bright a future as anywhere in the world. Oh, of course there aren't anymore young american G.I.'s beating the hill, hammering out their growing pains and forging lifelong army friends; there is a new generation of german soldiers there now, no doubt doing the same things that we used to do.
I discovered that there are families and schools and businesses flourishing there in the stunning landscape of the Rhön. More and more sites pop up showing happy vibrant life there. I highly recommend the german website www.rhoenline.de . Yes, it's all in german and much of it you may not understand but take a little time to look around and you will see the beauty that is the Wildflecken area. Some browser pages have translation functions (i.e. Google) and there are many translation sites on the web, some are free but don't expect too much. Usually the translation needs translating, for example, Wildflecken is translated as 'wild spots' or 'game spots' and the syntax seems all screwed up but it's worth the effort and time when things become clearer to you.
I have made a lot of progress on the wesite in the past couple of weeks. All the links are working now, at least I think they are. I've added a couple of pages for C.Co. who had their first reunion
this summer (lucky bastards). I hope to expand on them in the future. Theres a page for the new Rhön Kaserne which includes lots of current post photos. Best of luck to our comrades.
There are individual pages for each of us in our little circle of contacts and I am always looking for ways to expand those. Possien came up with the idea for 'Memory Bytes' as seen on his page; little one or two line snipets of memories. Give me yours to add to your pages. Also, follow the link to his business site. There is a new guestbook to sign. Unfortunately, the old one was lost and all the comments that you all wrote are gone. Would you sign again? I hope so.
Again, I ask you to dig out any old pics you have stashed away. If you don't have a scanner just stick them in an envelope and mail them to me. I will scan them for you and burn them onto a cd for you (at no charge). I promise to take care of them. I know that they are irreplacable.
Much thanks to everyone for contributing to the website. This site is for all of you as much as it is for me. For the time being it will be focused on us enlisted guys and our lives and times in Wildflecken. I may include the others in time but there is some resistance to that idea right now.
Keep watching the website as it changes almost daily (sometimes hourly) and if you have constructive ideas, let me have them.
Thanks to officers 1LT Stan Nelson and 1LT John Mills for identifying 2LT andy Soule' in the picture with SFC Juan Armenta.
