FINDING TOWNS IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE

        by Richard Mathews  richard@alumni.caltech.edu

Walter Koempel writes [ML 5:24] of his search for the town
Herrenbreitungen in Thuringia. There is a great resource for
finding such towns.

JewishGen maintains a search engine called ShtetlSeeker at
http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/ While intended for Jewish
genealogy, it is great for anyone searching for towns in Central
and Eastern Europe.

If I go to the town search, enter Herrenbreitungen in Germany,
and specify Daitch-Mokotoff Soundex, I get these listings:

HERRENBREITUNGEN, Germany
latitude 50 45, longitude 10 20
Native name
179.3 miles SW of Berlin

KRUMFORDE, Germany
latitude 53 34, longitude 7 36
Native name
251.4 miles WNW of Berlin

If I go to distance search and search for all names within a few
miles of latitude 50 45 and longitude 10 20, the first few
entries give me other names for the town:

HERRENBREITUNGEN, Germany
latitude 50 45, longitude 10 20
Native name
0.0 miles N

KNOLLBACH, Germany
latitude 50 45, longitude 10 20
Native name
0.0 miles N

ALTENBREITUNGEN, Germany
latitude 50 46, longitude 10 20
Variant name
1.2 miles N

BREITUNGEN, Germany
latitude 50 46, longitude 10 20
Native name
1.2 miles N

Similarly, I can find candidates for most of the other towns
mentioned by Mr. Koempel.
